For 98-octane, the octane rating is thus 98 RON and it contains 0-5 % bioethanol. If an engine is run on petrol with too low an octane rating, the petrol vapour in the combustion chamber can self-ignite from the compression heat instead of from the spark from the spark plug. This is called engine knocking.
